Swing Bed Services
A Swing Bed (or Rehabilitation Bed) is a Medicare program designed to provide additional inpatient care to those needing extra time to heal or strengthen before returning home.
The term “swing bed” came from the idea that the patient will “swing” or “transition” from inpatient acute care through the program and return home to the same level of independence prior to entering the hospital. Swing Beds allow the physician to “swing” the level of care from “acute” to “skilled rehabilitation.”
Often the swing bed is used for patients who have had surgery such as hip surgery, joint replacement or major surgery. Patients who have received this type of treatment at another facility or who need to recover from an episode of illness have the opportunity to return to their communities amongst their family and friends until they are fully recuperated to return home.
At Roane General Hospital, our top priority for swing beds is to assist patients in recovering their independence and mobility through intensive therapeutic sessions. Our skilled therapists evaluate each patient’s capacity and develop a program to meet achievable goals.
