How's Your New Year's Resolutions Progressing?

focusNow that we are well into the New Year, how are your New Year’s Resolutions progressing? There are lots of ways to stay motivated, whatever your new health goals might be.

One of the most important things to remember with goals or resolutions is to not try to change everything at one time. Pick one of your goals that is most important to you and focus on that. Write down specific steps that you can take to reach this goal. For instance, instead of saying that you are not going to eat any carbohydrates, try to resolve to add more whole grains to your diet. Keep things in perspective and don’t be too hard on yourself. If you splurge and blow your diet one day or miss your workout, let that go and make sure you do better the next day. The other side of this is, when you are tempted to eat a high calorie ‘treat’, think about how much this will cost you in calories and consider the consequences. In order to burn off 500 extra calories you are going to have to invest approximately an hour of exercise. That tasty treat may not look as tempting when you think about how much it will cost in time and effort. As you are planning the steps that will help you reach your goal, plan changes that you can live with the rest of your life, don’t go to extremes. You might not want to exercise at the gym for 3 hours every day for the rest of your life, but you would probably be willing to take a 30 minute walk most days of the week.

When trying to find time to workout or exercise, some planning ahead will also help. Keep your workout clothes and shoes in your vehicle so that you’re not tempted to just stay home when you have to run home to change. Schedule your workouts as you would any other appointment, it is okay to schedule something into your day that promotes your health. Ask for help when you need it, whether you need encouragement from friends or family or assistance from a professional, be willing to ask for help.

Lastly, don’t always measure success by numbers on a scale. Think about how your goals and resolutions are helping to make you healthier, whether it is a change in weight, measurements, lab results, blood pressure or perhaps even just helping you to feel better. Take time for your health this year and plan how to reach your goals.
